Winter Hiking Essentials

Winter Hiking, the Birdy Way

There’s something extra special about hiking in the winter. The trails are quieter, the air feels sharper, and everything moves just a little slower—in the best way. Snow crunching under your boots, cold air filling your lungs, rosy cheeks you definitely earned. Winter hiking asks a bit more of you, but it gives a lot back.

One of the biggest challenges? Staying warm without overheating. If you’ve ever bundled up only to end up sweaty five minutes in (and freezing five minutes after that), you know the struggle.

The Layering Sweet Spot

Winter hiking is all about balance. You want layers that keep you warm, but also breathe as you move. Bulky hats can trap heat fast, and once they’re damp, they’re not doing you any favors.

On a recent winter hike, we tied a Birdy bandana around our head—and honestly, it was perfect. It kept our ears and head warm while still being breathable. No itchiness, no overheating, no constantly pulling it on and off. Just enough coverage to block the chill, with airflow to keep things comfortable as the trail climbed.

Worn over the ears, under a hood, or layered with a beanie when it’s extra cold, a bandana is one of those quiet MVPs you don’t realize you need until you do.

Why We Love a Bandana in Winter

Lightweight warmth – protection without bulk
Breathable – helps regulate temperature as you move
Versatile – head wrap, neck layer, ear cover, or face shield
Easy to stash – folds up small when you don’t need it

Winter adventures don’t look the same for everyone. Some days it’s a snowy summit, other days it’s a slow walk on a frozen trail with a friend. However you get outside, what you wear should support you—not slow you down.

At Birdy, we believe gear should be functional, flexible, and made for real life. Winter included.

So if you’re heading out this season, layer smart, move intentionally, and don’t underestimate the power of a simple bandana. It might just become your favorite cold-weather companion.

Happy hiking 🤍
